just got engaged? 10 things to do first (from a wedding pro)
You’re engaged — cue the happy tears, champagne pops, and that sparkly new ring you can’t stop staring at! 💫 But after the initial “OMG” moment… what comes next?
As a wedding photographer and videographer who’s helped capture dozens of love stories, I’m sharing the 10 things you actually need to do first — no fluff, no stress. Let’s get into it!

1. Soak in the moment
Before diving into planning mode, pause. Celebrate with your partner. Go on a date. Call your people. This is one of the most magical, fleeting seasons of your life — make memories first.
💡 Pro Tip: Take a selfie together or book a mini session to mark the occasion.
2. Announce It (Your Way!)
Post it, shout it, text it — or keep it private for a while. Whatever feels right, do that. If you’re posting online…
Use this caption idea:
easiest yes ever💍, Forever starts now, Sealing the deal with a ring and a promise!
3. Get your ring insured
It’s not glamorous, but it’s important. Call your insurance or look into adding it to your renter’s/homeowner’s plan. Peace of mind = priceless.

4. Talk Budget + Vision
Yes, even before picking a venue. Sit down with your partner (and anyone contributing) to talk about:
What kind of wedding fits your vibe (temple wedding, elopement, big party, destination?)
How much you want to spend
What’s most important to you
5. Pick a Season or General Date
You don’t need an exact date, but having a season or month will help you check availability with vendors and venues.

6. Build a Priority Vendor List
Here’s the truth: great vendors book early. Your top 3 to secure quickly:
Venue
Photographer/Videographer (👋 hi, it’s me!)
Planner (optional, but gold)
7. Start Your pinterest board
Now’s the time to pin away! But don’t feel like your board has to be perfect. Save what inspires you — flowers, dresses, color palettes, ceremony vibes — and let it evolve.

8. Create a wedding email
One simple Gmail account just for wedding stuff (like: robandtay2025@gmail.com) will keep everything organized and spam-free.

9. Book an engagement session
This isn’t just about the photos — it’s about:
Getting comfortable in front of the camera
bonding with your photographer
using the photos for save-the-dates, website or instagram!
💬 “Do we really need one?” YES. And most wedding packages with me include one free 😏
10. Start a Wedding Website!
Minted, Zola, The Knot — whatever platform you like, grab your URL and start building your site. It’s where guests will find the schedule, dress code, registry, etc.
🎁 Bonus: Add a free registry while you’re at it!
